A bit of advice for my college bound daughter

Why is ignorance bliss?
The more you learn, the more you wonder, worry, and debate. You have obviously grown up listening to my occasional (ahem) rants, and though it may seem that I would have been happier not knowing what was going on in our world, that isn't the case. I hope to get to a point in my life when I can help effect (a or e?) change, but in the meantime, I will try to learn as much as I can and educate those around me. That said, I hope you learn that it is far better to form your own opinions than to regurgitate ones that are fed to you.

Someone once said "the truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable."
Learning, in itself, is painful. As you get older you want to think you have learned everything, and you feel you've earned the right to tell everyone where it's at. But just as Mom said, old dogs can learn new tricks, and so they should.
What you learn can be just as painful, too. People lie, cheat, steal, kill, rape. There are inconvenient truths all around us. But shutting yourself off to them and living in your own world will drive you out of reality fast. Find the courage to face the truth - especially the truth about yourself - and deal with it as it is, not as you wish it would be. No stone is harder to move than the one you believe is not there.
Above all, to thine own self be true. You may have to lie or deceive from time to time, but do so knowing full well what you are doing and what the consequences are.
